Part 1: Finding Your Everyday Pen

The best pen is the one that feels right in your hand.

Before we worry about how our writing looks, our very first step is simple: we need to find a tool. And you don’t need to look any further than your own home to start.

Take a look around your house and gather a few different pens. They could be standard ballpoints, gel pens, or a fine liner you found in a drawer. Grab a piece of scrap paper and just start doodling or writing random words. What we are looking for right now isn't the most expensive or professional tool. We are looking for a pen that you feel genuinely comfortable holding—one that feels nice as it runs across the paper. This will be your reliable, everyday pen for practice and writing notes.

I want to share how I found my own favourites. I live in Australia, and a while back, I went into Officeworks just to look at their pen selection. I spent time trying out a variety of different brands and styles right there at the display, just to see which ones felt the best to me. Through doing that, I discovered that my particular style is a very fine pen—one that gives you an almost sharp, yet incredibly smooth feeling as it glides across the paper. I picked a couple that gave me that exact feeling, and as time has gone by, I’ve slowly added more to my collection.

You don’t need an entire collection today. For now, just find one single pen that feels comfortable to write with. Once you have it, we are ready to dive straight into our very first project.
